The McLaren Formula 1 team has been rocked by the earth-shattering realisation that they are actually in contention for both the World Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

“I mean, who knew?” said a bewildered McLaren spokesperson, “We’ve spent years perfecting the art of being the plucky brits who finish second. But Red Bull inconveniently decided to be rubbish and out of nowhere we’re expected to be winning! It’s a lot to process.”

The revelation came after the Italian Grand Prix. Yet another race where McLaren had the fastest car on the grid, only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory due to a mix of distinctly average strategy and team infighting. Therefore Allowing Charles Leclerc and Ferrari to claim a surprise victory at home.

“We didn’t realise this year’s championships were still going to be honest. We thought Max and Red Bull scored enough points last year to be awarded this year’s title by default. We just thought this year was just a friendly, hence why this season’s been so good!” he nervously laughed.

The situation has reportedly thrown the entire team into chaos. Mechanics were seen post race furiously flipping through rulebooks, trying to decipher what “winning” actually entails. Meanwhile, the marketing department scrambled to rework McLaren’s philosophy from “We’re Getting There!” to “Wait, We’re Here?

In an effort to clear things up, McLaren has released a statement reminding everyone that they are, in fact, a serious Formula 1 team. “We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by our recent fast car,” the statement read. “We promise to get back to being the loveable underdogs as soon as possible. In the meantime, we’ll try to figure out this whole ‘championship contention’ thing.”
